Kolme MOŸ MOŸ -kollektiivin jäsentä Ella Holappa, Ella Posti ja Alina Sakko toteuttivat tanssiteoksensa Joku Paikallinen Kontulan seniorikeskuksessa marraskuussa 2022 osana Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen Helsingin mallin hanketta.

Joku Paikallinen – projektissa meille on tärkeää ajatus jatkumosta.

On arvokasta, miten pääsemme hetkeksi sisään heidän todellisuuteensa, sekä he vastavuoroisesti meidän.

KONTULAN SENIORIKESKUKSESSA HAVAITTUA / OPITTUA / AJATELTUA

Three members of the MOŸ MOŸ collective Ella Holappa, Ella Posti and Alina Sakko performed their dance piece Some Local at the Kontula Senior Centre in November 2022 as part of Reality Research Centre’s communal project the Helsinki model.

MOŸ MOŸ collective is a non-hierarchical artistic support network, which was born out of friendship and mutual understanding of dance as a form of art. The focus of the collective is on artistic cooperation that supports the work of each autonomous artist and promotes collaboration. As artists spread around Europe the members of the collective wish to navigate the broader field of dance together. The collective gathers seven dance artists from Argentina, France, Finland, Brazil and Sweden who studied together at London Contemporary Dance School. In addition to the three collective members the Some Local working group included sound designer Omri Kochavi and scenographer Tua Holappa.

We wanted to collaborate with the Reality Research center as their Helsingin malli project created a perfect path for us to be able to access a location and audeince for our piece. We wanted to bring our performance to an intimate and closed community, bringing dance into spaces that it isn’t usually seen in. With the help of The Reality Research Center Kontula seniorcenter became the second performance space for our project Some Local. We value the vision of the Reality research center and their desire to question and reform the reality around us through the medium of performance art. The collaboration with them felt meaningful to us at the beginning of our careers as dance artists.

BACKGROUND OF THE PIECE

Some Local is a performance that travels and moulds itself according to each location it comes across. Our project’s core idea lies in our interest to find ways on making contemporary dance and ourselves as artists more accessible and approachable. Therefore we have created a performance that includes a tight interaction with its surrounding environment and community. Through this interaction we mould our piece to fit each performance space and community individually. In practice this means we arrive to a location with a precisely choreographed framework and spend 1-2 weeks integrating with the environment through different tasks.

In Some Local the idea of continuity is important. At Kontula Senior Center the continuum was formed of the time we spent together with the residents of the centre and ended with a moment of different residents coming together in the form of a performance. We spent our first days chatting with the residents in the different shared living spaces and doing various movement and presence practices together. We talked about memories of songs and favourite places in the world as well as sang together accompanied by our sound designer Omri. In addition to the habitants we paid close attention to the different rhythms and ways of moving around inside the centre. Through these observations, talks and encounters we moulded the movement material, sound design and scenography of our piece creating a unique version of Some Local for the residents and employees of Kontulan Senior Centre. The performance included snippets of our experiences together and themes we had discussed over our week at the centre.

Before our time at Kontula Senior Center Some local took place in Northern Finland in the Municipality of Ii. It is very intriguing to us how many different realities we get to experience through this piece. Both Ii and Kontula Senior Center are places we wouldn’t have necessarily stumbled upon if it weren’t for this project. The people and the places are the ones that make their reality around them. It is very valuable to us that we get to step inside their reality for a bit and mutually we get to share ours.

WHAT WE LEARNED/OBSERVED/THOUGHT ABOUT AT KONTULA SENIOR CENTRE

The fact that this time Some Local was taking place inside an institution and people’s homes became an important aspect. We were in constant reflection throughout the process of what our role in this type of place with the Some Local project was.

At the senior centre we reflected on how different places mould the content of our piece as well as change the tools we use as performers. We discussed the different realities we as performers can hold during a performance setting. For example what is more of a familiar and what is more of an unfamiliar state of performativity for us. Further reflecting on which states of performativity and performance spaces would require more adaptation from us or new tools to perform. After our performance at Kontula Senior Centre we described our state of performativity for example through describing how much we give and how much we receive energy in the moment of the performance. We are very intrigued to work with these thoughts and observations in different places in the future.

At the senior centre we decided to approach the performance space by asking if it is an elevated space or closer to an every day feel. We talked with the residents about what they think makes everyday life celebratory. These conversations and the centre’s custom to put on happenings became the guiding factors on the spatial decisions in the piece. During our time at the centre we used its public hallway areas to create and rehearse the movement material for the piece. This created an open space for the residents and employees to interact with us and inform our constantly developing audience relationship.

The employees of the centre told us that multisensory experiences are a well received element in performances for the residents. The changes in sensory experiences keeps the residents engaged in what is happening around them. This was an interesting choreographic lens for us to use and ended up being an important factor on decisions made in regards to the performance. In the performance we utilised multisensory experiences by having a familiar singalong song as well as a moment where the audience members were given roses.

Due to the small performance spaces and delightfully large amount of audience members we decided to perform three times during one day. This was a new aspect for the project.

Special thanks to the residents of Kontula Senior Centre that we got to join your everyday life and to Päivi Turunen, Piitu Relander and Katja Kirsi for enabling us to execute this part of Some Local! Thank you to all the employees for your hard work and
for taking us in with such warmth. The week that we spent with you was exceptionally important.
