Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen Mahdottoman esityksen residenssiohjelman (2019–2021) ensimmäinen esitys on Mimosa Norjan Dear Deer, joka esitetään ANTI-festivaalilla Kuopion Väinölänniemellä keskiviikkona 11.9.2019 klo 19. Vapaa pääsy.

Dear Deer -teoksessa puiston keskellä on kontti, jonka yksi seinä on kokonaan lasia. Kontissa on kuollut valkohäntäpeura. Mies nylkee, pesee ja paloittelee peuran, pakkaa lihan paperiin, jakaa ihmisille, siivoaa huoneen ja lähtee. Miehen sisällä on kunnioitus ja keskittyminen.
Teos tutkii elämän reunaa, kaikkien elollisten olentojen kuolevaisuutta.
”Piilotammeko kuolemanpelon edessä myös eläinten kuolemat niin kauas, ettemme näe enää niihin liittyvää aiheuttamaamme kärsimystä? Mitä suhteemme kuolemaan ja eläimiin kertoo meistä? Mitä haluaisimme sen kertovan”, kysyy residenssitaiteilija Mimosa Norja. ”Lähdin käsittelemään aihetta tuntemisen, empatian ja avoimuuden kautta, eli tavallaan oletetusti feminiinisten lähtökohtien kautta geneerisesti maskuliinisten, väkivaltaa, voimaa ja järkeä arvostavien lähtökohtien sijaan. Teoksena Dear Deer viittaa eläinten ja eläinten osien välineelliseen ja joskus myös väkivaltaiseen käyttöön taiteen kontekstissa mutta halusin tehdä toisin ja lähteä liikkeelle lempeyden ja kunnioituksen kautta. Silti, mikään määrä vilpittömyyttä ja kunnioitusta ei poista teon ristiriitaisuutta. Esityksen mahdottomuus sisältyy juuri siihen.”
”Minä haluan, että se on pakko nähdä. Jos olisimme lähempänä, olisimme vastuussa. Jos se olisi sisällämme, olisimme se.”
Torstaina 12.9. klo 19.00-20.30 järjestetään Galleria Ars Liberassa (Suokatu 30, Kuopio) vapaa ja avoin keskustelutilaisuus Dear Deer -esityksestä sekä sen teemoista kuolemasta, eläimistä ja taiteesta. Mukaan kutsutaan sekä aiheita työssään käsitteleviä ihmisiä että kaikki, joita ne kiinnostavat.
Mahdottoman esityksen residenssiohjelma (2019-2021) on tarkoitettu uraansa aloittaville taiteilijoille tai muuten utooppisille tekijöille, jotka toimivat Suomessa, ja joilla on esitystaiteellisia, vielä toteutumattomia, mahdottomia unelmia. ANTI-festivaali on Mahdottoman esityksen residenssiohjelman pääyhteistyökumppani.

Mimosa Norja on Aalto-yliopiston taiteiden ja suunnittelun korkeakoulusta vuonna 2018 taiteen maisteriksi valmistunut muotoilija ja pukusuunnittelija, joka tutki opinnäytteessään pukua muutoksen agenttina osallistavan esityksen kontekstissa. Viime aikoina hänen kokemuksellisten pöytälaatikkoesitystensä teemoina ovat olleet empatia pukukeskeisen esityksen keskeisenä elementtinä, galleriatilan valkoisten laatikoiden tuottamien rakenteiden rikkominen yltiöpäisellä jakamisella sekä kuolevaisuuden ja luonnon osasena olemisen kokemus ja niiden merkitys sille, mitä ja miten ihminen on maailmassa.

Dear Deer
“In Japan they teach as part of the school lunch program that we take the lives of plants in order to live ourselves.”
The first performance in Reality Research Center’s Residency Program for Impossible Performance (2019-2021) is Mimosa Norja’s Dear Deer. It will be performed on Wednesday September 11, 2019 at 7pm in Väinölänniemi, Kuopio, Finland, as a part of ANTI Contemporary Art Festival program. Entry free of charge.
In Dear Deer there’s a shipping container placed in the middle of a park with a window wall across one side of it. There is a dead white-tailed deer inside the container. A man skins, washes and butchers the deer, wraps the meat into paper, gives it away to people, cleans the room and leaves. His every movement is respectful and focused.
Dear Deer studies the edges of living, the mortality of all living beings.
”When we are doing our best hiding from the death are we also hiding the deaths of the animals so effectively we can no longer see the amount of suffering we cause? What does our relationship with death and with animals tell about us? What would we like it to tell”, ask the residency artist Mimosa Norja. ”I approached the topic through feeling, empathy and openness or, in other words, through a presumed feminine premise instead of generically from a masculine starting point that values violence, strenght and rationality. As an artwork Dear Deer refers to instrumental and at times also violent use of animals and animal parts in the context of art. Instead I wanted to do things differently and approached the topic through gentleness and respect. Nevertheless, no amount of sincerity and respect will remove the contradictions from the act. This is exactly where the impossibility of the performance stems from.”
“I want it to be impossible not to see it, impossible to walk by without noticing. If we would be closer to it, we would have to take responsibility. If it would be inside us, we would be it.”
On Thursday September 12 from 7pm to 8.30 pm at Galleria Ars Libera (Suokatu 30, Kuopio) a free and open discussion on Dear Deer and the themes it revolves around – Death, Animals and Art – is arranged. We are inviting people who have dealt with these topics in their work – as well as everyone who is interested in them – to participate. The discussion is mainly in Finnish.
Residency Program for Impossible Performance (2019-2021) invites applications from artists at the beginning of their career or people with an otherwise utopian agenda who work in performing arts in Finland and who have dreams that haven’t come true yet. ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival is the main partner of the residency program.

Mimosa Norja is a costume designer and a product designer who graduated from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 2018. In her Master’s Thesis she discussed costume as an agent of change from the perspective of a participatory performance. Lately she has been mainly working on contemporary performances that study themes like empathy in the context of a costume-centered performance, tearing down unequal structures in art by reclaiming the gallery spaces through excessive sharing, and how the understanding of our own mortality and our connectedness with nature shape the way we are in the world.
