Time to Audience is a reading event in two acts. It is a piece of time handed to us when we appear as an audience. Both acts are available as a limited edition of reading objects.
The first act is performed at the festival week of Moving in November 2021. The event of reading will commence at 7pm on Saturday the 13th of November.
The second act takes place at Ebb & Flow, the inaugural exhibition of Kuva/Tila, the gallery of the Fine Arts Academy and will continue through out the exhibition period between 3.12.2021-30.1.2022.
Time to Audience is an episode in a series of experiments which compose the Audience Body, premiering in 2022. It is a part of Tuomas Laitinen’s artistic doctorate at the Performing Arts Research Center Tutke, Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy.
On the Audience Body
There is a peculiar duality haunting theaters across Europe: the division between the audience and the makers of art. For art to appear, the artist has to enter the stage and do something. This doing attracts attention; thus audience is born. The artist is the object of attention, the audience are the ones who attend. To draw attention to the audience would dispose of it as we know it. They too would start to perform, they too would enter the stage. So how to learn something about the audience? How to focus on the audience while letting it remain beyond the sphere of attention?
Since 2018 Tuomas Laitinen has conducted a series of experiments, which address this puzzling mystery. This series has been realized as more than 20 events of reading, in which the readers are invited to contemplate the phenomenon of audience while at the same time becoming its body. The series spans from the time before the outbreak of Covid-19 into to the time after the reopening of theaters. It thus documents a process of searching for the meaning of audience in exceptional conditions.
The 2022 program of Reality Research Center and Moving in November Festival feature Audience Body, which restages this series of readings and invites the audience to think about and feel itself as an emergent being. What is an audience now, as we are both closer to and further from each other like never before?
Performances
Time to Audience, act 1
The performance starts on Sat 13th Nov at 7pm. The audience members get a text on a paper roll to read. Each audience member reads the text independently at the same hour. The rolls are available for collecting an hour before the show at three festival venues. The language of the performance is English. Click for details and tickets.
Time to Audience, act 2
The second act takes place at Ebb & Flow, the inaugural exhibition of Kuva/Tila, the gallery of the Fine Arts Academy on 3.12.2021-30.1.2022. The art work consists of 40 readable rolls. One of them is displayed on a glass cube each day. The first audience member of the day can read the roll and then put the remains to a second glass cube next to the first one. As the exhibition goes on, the moments of reading will pile up inside the cube.

Ensimmäinen näytös esitetään osana Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaalia 2021. Esitys alkaa lauantaina 13. marraskuuta klo 19.
Toinen näytös esitetään Kuvataideakatemian Kuva/Tila-gallerian avajaisnäyttelyssä Ebb & Flow 3.12.2021-30.1.2022.
Time to Audience on jakso sarjassa kokeiluja, joista muodostuu vuonna 2022 ensi-iltansa saava Yleisöruumis. Se on osa Tuomas Laitisen taiteellista väitöstutkimusta Esittävien taiteiden tutkimuskeskus Tutkessa, Taideyliopiston Teatterikorkeakoulussa.
Yleisöruumiista
Teattereissa läpi Euroopan kummittelee kaksijakoinen haamu: yleisön ja taiteen tekijöiden välinen jakolinja. Jotta taidetta syntyisi, taiteilijan on astuttava lavalle tekemään jotain. Tekeminen herättää huomiota; niin syntyy yleisö. Taiteilija on huomion kohde, yleisö taas se, joka huomaa. Jos huomion siirtää yleisöön, se häviää sellaisena kuin sen tunnemme. Hekin alkavat esiintyä, hekin ajautuvat näyttämölle. Miten sitten oppia jotain yleisöstä? Miten kiinnittää huomio yleisöön ja antaa sen samalla viipyä huomion piirin tuolla puolen?
Vuodesta 2018 lähtien Tuomas Laitinen on valmistanut sarjaa kokeita, jotka tarttuvat tähän hämmentävään mysteeriin. Sarja koostuu yli kahdestakymmenestä lukutapahtumasta, joiden lukijat kutsutaan tunnustelemaan ilmiötä nimeltä yleisö, tullen samalla sen ruumiiksi. Sarja ulottuu ajasta ennen pandemian puhkeamista aikaan, jona teatterien ovet on jälleen avattu. Siten se dokumentoi prosessia, jossa yleisön merkitystä etsitään poikkeusoloissa.
Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen ja Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaalin vuoden 2022 ohjelmistossa esitettävä Yleisöruumis asettaa tämän lukutapahtumien sarjan uusiin kehyksiin ja kutsuu yleisön ajattelemaan ja tunnustelemaan itseään olentona, joka saapuu. Mitä yleisö on nyt, kun olemme uudella tavalla sekä lähempänä että kauempana toisistamme?

Time to Audience, 1. näytös
Esitys alkaa lauantaina 13. marraskuuta klo 19. Esityksen osallistujat saavat paperirullalla olevan tekstin luettavakseen. Kukin osallistuja lukee tekstin itsenäisesti, mutta samana ajankohtana muiden osallistujien kanssa. Rullat ovat noudettavissa kolmesta Liikkeellä marraskuussa -festivaalin esityspaikasta tuntia ennen esityksen alkua. Esityksen kieli on englanti. Katso lisätiedot täältä ja varaa lippusi täältä.
Time to Audience, 2. näytös
Toinen näytös esitetään Kuvataideakatemian Kuva/Tila-gallerian avajaisnäyttelyssä Ebb & Flow 3.12.2021-30.1.2022. Teos koostuu neljästäkymmenestä luettavasta kääreestä, joista yksi asetetaan päivittäin näytille lasiseen kuutioon. Ensimmäinen paikalle ehtinyt yleisön jäsen voi lukea käärön, ja asettaa sen toiseen lasiseen kuutioon. Näyttelyn kuluessa lukuhetket kasautuvat kuutioon.
