Mikä?
Mahdottoman esityksen residenssiohjelma on tarkoitettu uraansa aloittaville taiteilijoille tai muuten utooppisille tekijöille, jotka toimivat Suomessa, ja joilla on esitystaiteellisia, vielä toteutumattomia unelmia.
Ohjelma on osa Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen pääohjelmistoa vuosina 2019–2021. Pääyhteistyökumppanina toimii ANTI-festivaali Kuopiossa. Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskus valitsee residenssitaiteilijan avoimen haun kautta ja kunakin vuonna residenssi tuottaa ANTI-festivaalin ohjelmistoon syyskuussa ”mahdottoman” esityksen, jollaista ei ole vielä ennen koettu. Residenssiohjelman ensimmäinen esitys oli Mimosa Norjan Dear Deer vuonna 2019.
MITÄ TARJOTAAN?
Vuonna 2020 residenssiin valitaan yksi taiteilija. Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskus maksaa taiteilijalle vähintään 2500 euroa esityksen tekemisestä. Sen lisäksi hän saa käyttöönsä vähintään 1700 euroa tuotantorahaa ja harjoitustilan Eskus – Esitystaiteen keskuksesta, Helsingin Suvilahdesta 22.6.–19.7.2019. Residenssitaiteilijalle korvataan matkakulut Kuopioon sekä majoituskulut siellä kahden viikon ajalta. ANTI-festivaali järjestää teokselle sen vaatiman esitystilan ja vastaa yhdessä Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen kanssa teoksen tiedotuksesta ja markkinoinnista. Tämän lisäksi molemmat tuotantotahot, Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskus ja ANTI-festivaali, tarjoavat tekijälle mentorointiapua ja tuotannollisen tuen esityksen harjoitus- ja esitysvaiheessa.
MITEN HAKEA?
Hakuaika vuoden 2020 residenssiin on 21.11.–20.12.2019. Lähetä hakemus sähköpostilla hakuajan puitteissa osoitteeseen info@todellisuus.fi. Merkitse sähköpostin nimikenttään ”Hakemus mahdottoman esityksen residenssiin”. Myöhästyneitä hakemuksia ei käsitellä.
Hakemuksen tulee sisältää:
- Yhteystietosi: nimi, sähköpostiosoite, puhelinnumero ja postiosoite
- Ansioluettelosi
- Kuvaus mahdottomasta esityksestä, jonka haluat residenssissä toteuttaa
- Vastaus kysymyksiin: 1) Mikä esityksen sisällössä ja/tai muodossa on mielestäsi mahdotonta tai ennenkokematonta? 2) Miksi esitys pitäisi silti toteuttaa? Huomioithan, että jos taloudelliset työskentelyolosuhteesi ovat sinusta mahdottomat ja haet residenssiohjelmaan niitä parantaaksesi, se ei vielä tee esityksesi sisällöstä tai muodosta mahdotonta.
- Esityksen budjetti, eli arvio siitä miten paljon tuotantorahaa käyttäisit ja mihin.
Vaikka residenssiesitys esitetään ANTI-festivaalilla, sen ei tarvitse olla paikkasidonnainen.
MITEN RESIDENSSITAITEILIJA VALITAAN?
Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskuksen taiteellinen johtaja Janne Saarakkala valitsee vuoden 2020 mahdottoman esityksen toteuttajan hakemusten perusteella tammikuun aikana ja ilmoittaa valinnasta kaikille hakijoille 3.2.2020.

Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskus on vuonna 2001 perustettu Helsingistä käsin toimiva, esitystaiteellisten seikkailijoiden kollektiivi. Yhteinen pyrkimyksemme on havainnoida, kyseenalaistaa ja uudistaa todellisuutta tekemällä esityksiä. ANTI-festivaali on vuodesta 2002 saakka työskennellyt innovatiivisten taiteilijoiden kanssa projekteissa, jotka tutkivat ja avartavat urbaania tilaa. Festivaali järjestetään vuosittain Kuopiossa. Ympäri maailmaa tulevien taiteilijoiden teokset ottavat haltuunsa kaupungin julkisia tiloja – koteja, kauppoja, toreja, yrityksiä, metsiä, järviä. Esitystaiteen keskus eli Eskus on vuonna 2009 perustettu esitystaiteen tekijöiden yhteistyöalusta ja kohtaamispaikka. Alun perin viiden jäsenryhmän helsinkiläinen yhdistys on kasvanut valtakunnalliseksi yhdeksäntoista jäsenryhmän ja yli kahden sadan taiteilijan kulttuurialan yhteisöksi. www.eskus.fi

WHAT?
The Residency Program for Impossible Performance invites applications from artists at the beginning of their career or people with an otherwise utopian agenda who work in performing arts in Finland and who have dreams that haven’t come true yet.
The program is part of the main programme of the Reality Research Center in 2019–2021. The main partner is the ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival in Kuopio, Finland. The Reality Research Center will select the artist for the residency through an open application process and each year the Artist in Residency will produce an “impossible”, unprecedented performance for the ANTI Festival in September. The program’s first impossible performance was Mimosa Norja’s Dear Deer in 2019.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
In 2020, we will select one artist for the residency. Reality Research Center will pay the artist at least €2500 for the work on the performance. In addition, the artist will get at least €1700 to cover the production expenses as well as a rehearsal space at the Eskus Performance Center in Suvilahti, Helsinki, from June 22 till July 19, 2019. The program will also pay the artist’s travel expenses and accommodation in Kuopio for two weeks. ANTI Festival will provide the artist with a venue that is suitable for the production and will take care of publicity and marketing in collaboration with the Reality Research Center. In addition, the organizing parties, the Reality Research Center and the ANTI Festival, will assist the artist in the form of mentoring and production management during the rehearsals and performances.
HOW TO APPLY?
The application period for the 2020 residency is Nov 21 – Dec 20, 2019. Send the application by email within the application period to info@todellisuus.fi with the subject heading “Application to the Residency Program for Impossible Performances”. Late applications will not be considered.
The application must include:
- Your contact information: name, email address, phone number and mailing address
- Your résumé
- A description of the impossible performance you want to create during the residency
- Answers to the following questions: 1) Why do you think the performance is impossible or unprecedented? 2) Why should the performance be produced even though it’s impossible? Please bear in mind, if you find your working conditions unbearable financially and you apply to the program to improve them, it does not make your performance impossible alone.
- Production budget, i.e., an estimate of the amount of money you would need and a plan on how you would spend the money.
Even though the production will be part of the ANTI Festival, it doesn’t need to be site-specific.
HOW WILL THE ARTIST BE SELECTED?
Janne Saarakkala, the artistic director of the Reality Research Center, will review the applications and select the artist to create an impossible performance in 2020. He will make the decision by the end of January 2020 and inform all the applicants about the decision on Feb 3, 2019.

Eskus Performance Center is a collaboration platform and meeting place for performing artists. Founded in 2009 in the form of registered association of five Helsinki-based performing arts groups, Eskus has grown into a national cultural community with eleven performing arts groups and more than two hundred artists. www.eskus.fi
